Shifting from Design to Consulting

After years of immersing myself in the world of interior design, I had a realization that changed the course of my career. While I found immense joy in the creative process—transforming spaces, curating color palettes, and bringing visions to life—I discovered that my passions extended beyond designing. I was equally passionate about the operational side—building systems, managing teams, and improving processes.

As I navigated through various design projects, I began to focus on building systems, managing workflows, and mentoring my team. I noticed that these operational aspects were not just tasks for me, but areas where I truly thrived. Over time, I honed my skills in project management, team dynamics, and financial oversight, ultimately becoming well-versed in the complexities of running a successful design business.

With this newfound clarity, I recognized an opportunity: why not share my expertise with

others?

This question led me to consider a pivot in my business model, one where I could leverage my experience to support other designers in enhancing their operations. I envisioned a role that would allow me to stay connected to the interior design community while helping fellow designers streamline their processes and unlock their full potential. And thus, The Grounded COO was formed.

This shift wasn’t easy. I had to build new service offerings, adjust my branding, and market myself to a different clientele. There were challenges along the way: navigating a new industry landscape, establishing my credibility as a consultant, and learning how to balance my time between design projects and consulting work. But within a few months, I had secured my first consulting client. It was exhilarating to see how my insights helped them streamline their operations. I found a rewarding balance between both the design and operational sides of my business - ultimately teaching me the importance of adaptability and diversifying revenue streams.

Transitioning into consulting has been an enriching journey. I now have the privilege of working with talented designers who are passionate about their craft but may struggle with the operational side of their businesses. Together, we delve into their workflows, identify bottlenecks, and develop tailored strategies to improve efficiency and productivity. Whether it is helping a designer build a cohesive team culture or assisting them in managing finances more effectively, my goal is to empower them to grow their businesses sustainably.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of consulting is witnessing the transformation of my clients. It's like watching a designer unveil their latest masterpiece when I see them implement the systems and processes we've developed together. These implementations afford designers newfound relief and empowerment as they regain control over their businesses, allowing them to focus more on what they love—designing beautiful spaces.

As I reflect on this journey from design to consulting, I am grateful for the experiences that have shaped my path. It’s not just about shifting careers; it’s about embracing a holistic approach to design that encompasses both creativity and business acumen.

Whether you’re a designer looking to enhance your operational efficiency or simply someone interested in the intersection of creativity and business, I invite you to stay tuned.
